Dhanbad, Nov 18: A few armed dacoits attacked the house of famous furniture businessman Uttam Gupta located in the heart of Giridih city under Sadar police station late at night on Wednesday. They looted cash and jewelry worth around Rs. 30 lakh.

The dacoity has rocked the police department as Uttam Gupta’s house is considered to be in the most protected area of Giridih township. Office of deputy commissioner (DC), police control room (PCR), CRPF camp, bus stand, Sadar police station, district Congress office is also adjacent to the house of this furniture businessman.

In the course of looting, the criminals injured 13 years old son of Uttam Gupta by hitting him with a shovel on his head. The businessman lives on the first floor of the building while his furniture shop functions in the basement.

According to official sources, the armed dacoits entered the two- storey building of Gupta at around 1 a.m. and after two and half hours looting spree, they fled at 3.30 am. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sanjay Rana reached the spot in the morning and began the investigation. “Assessment is being done about robbery valuation,” he said.

Police have taken a labourer, who was working construction work in the businessman’s house, in their custody for interrogation.

Gupta told the media that criminals entered his house after breaking the door. They took his aged mother in possession at gunpoint and began beating his wife Deepa Gupta and son Priyansu Gupta. They also attacked him with a shovel which hit his son.

The criminals got down all the ornaments from Deepa Gupta’s body and searched all rooms for the cash amount. “They were asking me to give Rs. 25 lakh cash that I had reportedly kept in the house as a contractor had informed them,” said Gupta to media persons in the morning.

They then tied all family members in a room and fled with three mobile phones and the Hyundai car of the businessman.
