Ranchi, Dec.3: A lady who did not get proper treatment of Pilonidal Sinus in the last 20 years due to technical and financial reasons was treated within two minutes at Sadar Hospital free of cost.

The success came after the surgeon of the hospital, Dr Ajit Kumar, with help of a laser machine operated upon the vertebrate column end of the 30-yr-old lady, Sunita Kumari, with the help of OT assistant, Niraj, Nandini and Pranav, a Sadar Hospital employee said.

“This is for the first time an operation of this kind was done with the help of a laser in Sadar Hospital. A non-Ayushmaan patient got treatment free of cost. Generally for such an operation, one has to spend not less than Rs 35000 in a private hospital

Dr Ajit confirmed the development saying “operation took only two minutes while remaining time was consumed in preoperative and postoperative care before discharge.”

An insider said Laser Machines are not available at hospitals. Thus when Dr Kumar asked how he got access to the machine he explained how.

“Officials of Lasotronix offered the Laser machine for demonstration and I used to treat a poor patient who had approached me for treatment and I had her number with me,” Dr Kumar said.

A pilonidal sinus (PNS) is a small hole or tunnel in the skin. It may fill with fluid or pus, causing the formation of a cyst or abscess. It occurs in the cleft at the top of the buttocks. A pilonidal cyst usually contains hair, dirt, and debris. It can cause severe pain and can often become infected.

Generally, a Pilonidal cyst incision and drainage is done in a doctor’s office, under local anesthesia. First, the healthcare provider gives an injection to numb the area. Then, make a small incision in the cyst to drain the pus. The entire process used to take at least one hour. When a laser is used this process is not required. It is simpler and hardly takes two minutes.
