Nagaland, Meghalaya CMs demand removal of AFSPA

Dec 6: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, on Monday demanded the removal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from the their state stating that the law has tarnished the image of the country.

“I’ve spoken to Union Home Minister, he is taking the matter very seriously. We’ve given financial assistance to affected families. We’re asking Central govt to remove AFSPA from Nagaland. This law has blackened the image of our country,” said Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio after attending the funeral of civilians killed in the firing incident.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma also said that he would personally speak to Amit Shah on repealing AFSPA.

“Will personally take it up with Amit Shah. Coalition is a different issue, matters like these are a different issue,” said Conrad Sangma.

Meanwhile, the Centre has given an ex-gratia amount of Rs 11 lakh each and the state government has given Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

A day after the incident, the Nagaland government on Sunday prohibited all mobile internet, data services, bulk SMS of all providers in the entire area of Mon district with immediate effect.
