Eastern states powerlifting championship begins at Dhanbad’s Maithon

Dhanbad, Dec 17: The three-day (December 17 to 19) Eastern states powerlifting championship began here at DVC Maithon Station Club on Friday.

Secretary of the Jharkhand Powerlifting Association and international powerlifter Indrajit Singh said that over 200 men and women powerlifters of  eight states including Bihar, Odisha, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Sikkim, Mizoram and host Jharkhand are participating in the three days competition.

This competition holds huge significance for the powerlifters of these eight states as they will qualify for the national championship on the basis of their performance in this championship.

DVC Maithon Project in-charge BB Das inaugurated the championship and expressed gratitude to the Jharkhand Powerlifting Association for organizing such a mega event (eastern states championship) at a small place like Maithon like which is around 55 km away from the district headquarters. He said that the eastern states championship will attract people in the region.

“Powerlifting’s popularity is growing among the youth very fast. Gym club at every nook and corner shows its popularity and importance,” said BB Das.

State secretary Indrajit Singh on the occasion said that powerlifting is now not just a game but has also become a source of job opportunities. Army, railway and other public sector units have demand for powerlifters.

International powerlifter Devi Prasad Chatterjee, DVC deputy general manager SK Lal, Rakesh Kesri, CISF deputy commandant  Pradeep Kumar Viswakarma were present in the inaugural function of the championship.
