New Delhi, Dec.28: Hindu religious leader Kalicharan Maharaj has refused to apologise for his derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi.  He said that he is ready to face any punishment even if it is death.

He said, “I don’t regret what I said and will not apologise. Nathuram Godse is actually Mahatma in the real sense.”

Kalicharan Maharaj alias Abhijit Sarag, a resident of Shivajinagar in the old city area of Akola, made the remarks on Sunday during an event called ‘Dharam Sansad’ at Raipur in Chhattisgarh.

Reportedly, a case on ‘Godman’ Kalicharan Maharaj was registered on Tuesday in Maharashtra for using derogatory words against Mahatma Gandhi.

Local Congress leaders organised a protest outside the City Kotwali police station on Monday, accusing him of hurting people’s feelings.

According to a police official from Kotwali police station, the police opened a case against the seer under Indian Penal Code Sections 294 (obscene actions) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) based on a complaint filed by local Congress functionary Prashant Gawande.

Kalicharan Maharaj allegedly hurled derogatory comments against Mahatma Gandhi and praised his assassin Nathuram Godse during the two-day ‘dharma sansad’ (religious parliament) in Raipur on Sunday evening.

He had also urged people to elect a devout Hindu leader as the country’s leader in order to safeguard Hinduism. In Raipur, he was charged with a crime and a FIR was filed against him.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel slammed his remarks, and the subject was discussed in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Monday.

It is a “hypocrite’s illusion” if he believes he can achieve his goal by abusing the Father of the Nation and spreading hate in society, according to Baghel.

He further stated that anyone who tries to incite others by making such remarks will face severe legal consequences.

Nawab Malik, Maharashtra’s Minister for Minority Affairs, has addressed the issue in the state Assembly, demanding that the religious leader be charged with treason and arrested.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar remarked, “The MVA government will request a report on the words (of Kalicharan Maharaj) and take strong action.”
