The number of cases of fast-spreading Omicron variant has risen to 1,700 in India, with Maharashtra reporting the most number of infections at 510. The country also saw a 22 per cent jump in new Covid cases as it reported 33,750 infections.
In the previous 24 hours, at least 123 people have died as a result of the coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths to 4,81,893. On Sunday, India reported 27,553 infections and 284 fatalities from the virus.
In India, the Omicron variant has spread to 23 states. With 510 cases, Maharashtra is the worst-affected state, followed by Delhi with 351 infections.
India’s active Covid case count is 1,45,582, with 10,846 recoveries in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of recoveries to 3,42,95,407.
A total of 1,45,68,89,306 vaccine doses have been delivered thus far in the country.
Vaccination is now available for teenagers aged 15 to 18 years old, following a spike in Covid cases in several towns. Over 8 lakh teenagers have signed up for Covaxin through the government’s CoWin portal, and each will receive a dose.
Only Covaxin will be given to teenagers, according to the Health Ministry, and more doses of the vaccine will be supplied to all states and union territories. Beginning January 10, the precautionary third dose will be administered to the vulnerable groups.
