To date, India has given out 152.89 crore vaccination doses. From Monday, the country began delivering a “precautionary” anti-infection dose. On the first day, more than 9 lakh healthcare and frontline personnel, as well as 60 or more citizens with comorbidities, received their third Covid vaccination, according to the Health Ministry.

On Monday, Maharashtra, one of the states hardest hit by the Covid pandemic, reported 33,470 new COVID-19 cases, including 1,247 Omicron variant cases and eight deaths. The third wave of the coronavirus pandemic has begun, according to Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope, and will peak by the end of January.

According to the Ministry of Health, India has conducted 69.31 crore Covid tests so far, with 15,79,928 being tested yesterday.

In a new guideline, the government’s top medical agency stated that COVID-19 patients’ contacts do not need to be tested unless they are recognised as high-risk. It stated that asymptomatic persons in community settings, patients discharged according to home isolation recommendations, as well as patients discharged from a COVID-19 facility and those travelling within the United States should not be tested.

In the third Covid wave, India is seeing a hospitalisation rate of 5-10%, according to the government, which also noted that the situation is “dynamic and fluid, and the requirement for hospital care may change swiftly.”

Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Health Minister, on Monday urged states and union territories to ensure that preparations for the Covid surge do not fall behind and emphasised the importance of maintaining a comprehensive synergy for seamless pandemic management.
