Lucknow, Jan 13: Days after UP’s Social Welfare Minister Swami Prasad Maurya resigned from the party, another MLA from Bidhuna Vinay Shakya has also put down his papers on Thursday. He is the eighth member of the legislature to resign in the last three days
Swami Prasad Maurya is the voice of the downtrodden and he is our leader. I am with him,” Shakya wrote in his resignation letter to the party.
This morning, BJP MLA Mukesh Verma had also quit the party. Notably, Swami Prasad Maurya, also a prominent Other Backward Class leader, had quit the state cabinet. On Wednesday, BJP MLA Avtar Singh Bhadana quit the party and is joining the Rashtriya Lok Dal, an SP ally. On Tuesday, Vinay Kumar Shakya from Bidhuna, too, announced his resignation.In addition to this, three other BJP MLAs Tindwari’s Brajesh Prajapati, Tilhar’s Roshan Lal Varma and Bilhaur’s Bhagwati Sagar announced their resignation.
On Wednesday, however, two Uttar Pradesh MLAs from the Congress and the SP, Naresh Saini and Hari Om Yadav, joined the BJP, a pleasant move for the ruling party as it deals with the abrupt defections from its ranks.
The BJP is likely to suffer a setback in the next Assembly elections as a result of the resignations. Between February 10 and March 7, Uttar Pradesh voters will elect 403 MLAs in seven phases. The results of the election will be announced on March 10.
