New Delhi, Jan 14: Two-time Olympic medallist P V Sindhu and world championship bronze medallist Lakshya Sen stormed into the semi-finals of the India Open 2022, at the KD Jadhav stadium on Friday.
Sindhu defeated compatriot Ashmita Chaliha in the straight sets of 21-7 21-18 in a match that lasted for 36 minutes, while Sen battled to defeat H S Prannoy 14-21 21-9 21-14 in another all-Indian quarterfinal.
The 26-year-old from Hyderabad set up a women’s singles last-four match with Thailand’s sixth seed Supanida Katethong, who advanced to the semifinals after Singapore’s third seed Yeo Jia Min withdrew due to a “high fever”.
Sen, seeded third, will face either Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong or Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen in the semifinals.
Aakarshi Kashyap will face Thai Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the other semifinal after the Indian defeated compatriot Malvika Bansod 21-12 21-15 in the quarterfinals on Friday.
In another last-eight match, Busanan defeated Lauren Lam of the United States 21-12 21-8. Ishaan Bhatnagar and Sai Pratheek K, the men’s doubles team, made a poor showing against Malaysian third seeds Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi, falling 7-21 7-21 in just 19 minutes.
Venkat Gaurav Prasad and Juhi Dewangan of India, seeded eighth, were no match for Chen Tang Jie and Peck Yen Wei of Malaysia in mixed doubles, losing 10-21 13-21 in in 23 minutes.
Nithin HV and Ashwini Bhat K of India were eliminated from the USD 400,000 event after losing 15-21 19-21 to Singapore’s Hee Yong Kai Terry and Tan Wei Han.
