New Delhi, Feb 5: After nearly three decades of manhunting, India’s most wanted terrorist Abu Bakar has been apprehended in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by Indian security agencies.

Abu Bakar is the prime accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and a close aide of Dawood Ibrahim.

Abu Bakar, whose full name is Abu Bakar Abdul Gafur Shaikh, was living in the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan at the time of the 1993 Mumbai bombings. A ‘Red Corner Notice’ was issued against him in 1997.

On March 12, 1993, Mumbai (then known as Bombay) was shaken by a series of 12 terrorist bombings in various locations, resulting in 257 deaths and over 700 injured.

The terrorist who was captured was involved in weaponry and explosives training in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the landing of RDX used in the serial attacks, and conspiracy and planning at Dawood Ibrahim’s Dubai villa.

With Mohammad and Mustafa Dossa, Dawood Ibrahim’s top lieutenants, Bakar was also involved in the smuggling of gold, clothing, and gadgets from Gulf countries to Mumbai.

Abu Bakar has various business interests in Dubai and is married to his second wife, an Iranian national. Bakar was caught in the year 2019. However, due to some documentation errors, he was able to avoid arrest by UAE officials.

According to sources, the extradition procedure for Bakar, one of India’s most wanted terrorists, has begun. The terrorist, who has been on India’s most-wanted list for nearly 29 years, will finally face the law after he is returned from the United Arab Emirates.
