Mumbai, Feb 6: Singing legend Lata Mangeshkar, the voice of generations of Indians and one of the biggest music icons of the country, died Sunday due to multiple organ failure, her sister Usha Mangeshkar and doctors treating her said.
From the film industry, actors Shabana Azmi, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and filmmaker Hansal Mehta paid tributes to the singer.
Calling Mangeshkar India’s national treasure, Azmi said her voice lit up our lives, gave us solace when we were sad, gave strength when we were low”.

“‘Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hain, Gar Yaad Rahe’ And how can one forget such a voice! Deeply saddened by the passing away of Lata Mangeshkar ji, my sincere condolences and prayers,” Kumar tweeted.
Ajay Devgn wrote, “An icon forever. I will always savour the legacy of her songs. How fortunate were we to have grown up listening to Lataji’s songs. Om Shanti. My deepest condolences to the Mangeshkar family.”
“the heavens are blessed” to be in the company of the Nightingale of India. “The nightingale moves on. The heavens are blessed. There will never be another Lataji. Om Shanti,” Mehta tweeted.
Veteran actors Dharmendra and his wife Heman Malini mourned the death of singer Lata Mangeshkar on social media.
Dharmendra took to his Twitter handle and shared a picture of him with the legend. Along with the image, he tweeted, “The whole world is sad, Can’t believe you have left us!!! We will miss you Lata ji, pray for your soul to be in peace.”

Hema also mourned Lata’s death and shared a series of Lata’s and her photos on her Twitter handle and wrote, “Feb 6 is a dark day for us – the legend who has given us a treasure trove of lilting songs, the Nightingale of India, Lataji, has left us to continue her divine music in heaven. It is a personal loss for me as our affection & admiration for each other was mutual.”
From Anil Kapoor to Manoj Bajpayee, several members from the film industry paid tribute to the legendary singer.
Anil Kapoor said he feels blessed to have known Lata Mangeshkar. “Heartbroken, but blessed to have known & loved this incredible soul…Lataji holds a place in our hearts that will never be taken by anyone else. That’s how profoundly she has impacted our lives with her music. May she rest in peace & light up the heavens with her brightness,” he tweeted.

According to Manoj Bajpayee, with Lata Mangeshkar’s demise, “golden era of music” has also ended. “A golden era of music world has truly ended!! Lata Ji you will be missed by millions of us & the generations coming after us!! Rest in peace!! #RIPLATAJI,” he grieved.
Sharing a picture of Lata Mangeshkar, Zoya Akhtar described the singer as “immortal.”
Actor Kangana Ranaut, too, mourned the demise of Lata Mangeshkar. “What a loss. India’s most beautiful voice is gone,” she wrote on Instagram story.
Bollywood filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, expressed grief over Lata Mangeshkar’s demise, saying that it’s a “personal loss” for him.
Bhandarkar said, “It’s a personal loss for me that Lata Mangeshkar is no more with us. I was in touch with her for several years.” The filmmaker continued, “Every 15 days I used to speak with her on the phone. On January 1 this year, I had wished her a Happy New Year. I feel very sad.”

Music maestro AR Rahman took to his Instagram handle and shared a photo of him with Laja ji. In her remembrance, he captioned the photo as, “Love, respect and prayers.”

Playback singer Shaan also shared an Insta post which had a couple of photos of him with the late legend and wrote, “She was Heaven Sent to us so we would know what the Voice of God sounds like .. voice of Maa Saraswati .. Voice of Divinity .. Thanks to my Father, I’ve had the good fortune of getting her affections and blessings through all these years ..”
Jasleen Royal shared an old monochrome picture of Lata ji, in which she could be seen sitting in front of a mic and smiling. In the post’s caption Jasleen left a heart emoji.
Punjabi singer Guru Randhawa wrote, “Rest in peace Lata Didi. Legendary artist,” alongside a photo of the late singer.
Gurdas Maan remembered the singer by posting a picture of Lata ji from her younger days and penned, “Forever The Greatest Of All Time.”
Telugu film star and MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna and Jana Sena chief K Pawan Kalyan also mourned Mangeshkar’s death.
