Ahmedabad, Feb 18: The 49 convicts in the Ahmedabad serial bomb blast case will be sentenced today by a special Gujarat court.

According to special public prosecutor Amit Patel, the sentence hearing completed on Tuesday, and the court of special judge A R Patel sets February 18 as the date for passing the ruling.

Last Monday, the court had pronounced 49 accused guilty of the crime, while 28 others were acquitted.

“The hearing on the sentencing is over and now the judgment is to be pronounced. The court has said that it will pronounce the order on February 18,” said Patel.

Under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the accused might be punished to life in prison or death (UAPA). They’ve also been charged with violating other provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On July 26, 2008, a succession of bomb bombings wreaked havoc on Ahmedabad, killing 56 people and injuring over 200 others. Harkat-ul-Jihand-al-Islami, an Islamic terrorist group, claimed responsibility for the attack. In a span of 70 minutes, the group detonated 21 bombs across the city. The bombings also targeted the Ahmedabad civil hospital. The attack was purportedly carried out in retaliation for rioting in Godhra, Gujarat, in 2002, which resulted in the deaths of several members of the minority group.
