Ranchi, Feb.19: The Observation Home in Dumardaga, where children in conflict with the law are kept for proper care during the trial in Juvenile Justice Board, will soon be imparted vocational training.

Additional director (social security) Satrunjay Kumar informed that the plan is being chalked out for the same and if everything goes well it will be finalised within 7 to 10 days.

“At present children are being imparted training in drawing and painting besides being made aware of moral values to ensure that whenever they come out the observation home they could behave properly and make their future bright. Now we are planning what other skills they could be given so that no one could misuse them for money or they do not deviate from the mainstream of society for money,” Kumar said.

An observation home employee welcomed the plan saying earlier the vocational training was started but somehow it could not last long.

“In August 2017 when Justice D.N.Patel was acting Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court a computer training centre was started at Dumardaga boys’ observation home. Jharkhand Legal Services Authority (Jhalsa) and the state government were running the centre where 10 boys of the observation home were selected for training for a month in Sohrai painting and computer typing. The state department of child, women and social welfare had provided the resources for computer training. Ten computers, along with a printer and a scanner, were also provided by the department. But somehow the programme could not last long after judges stopped paying attention to it,” the employee said.

A police official said that vocation training will keep children engaged in some fruitful work.

“We often keep on receiving complaints from the observation home. Sometimes children escape from there scaling the boundary wall, sometimes clashes take place between two groups and sometimes prohibited materials are recovered from there. If children are kept engaged in good work in the observation home, such complaints will reduce and the purpose of the observation home will be fulfilled,” the official said.
