Ranchi, Feb 19: With the arrival of Dr. Vineet Mahajan in the Cardio-Thoracic Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department of RIMS from AIIMS-Bhopal, the RIMS CTVS department continues to add new chapters in the history of the state-run hospital.
The CTVS department has performed its first heart valve repair by open-heart surgery on a 15-year-old Kairi Ho, a resident of East Singhbhum.
Head of the CTVS department Dr. Vineet Mahajan said that the poor girl was suffering from Rheumatic heart disease with a leaking heart valve.
“Her valve was repaired with a specialized technique after stopping her heart for 1 hour. The operation has gone smooth and she is doing well in the Intensive care unit. Usually, diseased valves are replaced by metallic prosthesis in this age group. Valve repairs are difficult procedures in children and are only done in advanced heart centres,” Dr. Mahajan said.
“There are many advantages of mitral valve repair which includes increased life span, improved quality of life, better preservation of heart function, lower risk of stroke and infection and no need for blood thinners (anticoagulation),” Dr. Mahajan added.
Dr. Mahajan also said that mitral valve repair is better than replacing it with a mechanical one as in case of replacement the patient has to take blood thinner medicines which is a problem in case the patient is planning for pregnancy.
Talking to Somhari Ho, the sister of Kairi Ho said that they have been roaming around different hospitals for the past three years.
“When we went to MGM, Jamshedpur they referred us here at RIMS. For the past 3 years, we have been going from hospital to hospital but no one could find the cause of the bad health,” Somhari said.
“I am very thankful to the hospital that they made my sister better again that too totally free of cost. The doctors and staff here are very supportive and I have not spent a single penny from my pocket,” Somhari added.
The doctors involved in the surgery include Dr. Vineet Mahajan (Surgeon), Dr. Rakesh Kumar Choudhary (Surgeon), Dr. Anshul Kumar (Surgeon), Dr. Nitesh Sinha (Anaesthesiologist), Dr. Mukesh (Anaesthesiologist) and Amit Singh (Perfusionist).
