Ranchi, Feb 21: A special CBI court on Monday will hear arguments on the quantum of sentence for the convicts in the Rs 139.5 crore Doranda treasury embezzlement case, the fifth and last case against RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav in the fodder scam.

Following his conviction on February 15, the former Bihar chief minister was transferred to Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Central Jail. He was then admitted to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) which is run by the government.

Lalu has been in prison since December 2017, serving the majority of his time in the RIMS. After his health deteriorated, he was transported to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi in January of last year.

Prasad, who was present in court at the time, was taken into custody on February 15, and arguments over the severity of his sentence will be heard today. The CBI’s lawyer had previously stated that the court would hear the sentence arguments on February 18.

In four previous fodder fraud trials, Prasad had been sentenced to 14 years in prison.

The final case concerned withdrawals of Rs 139.35 crore from the Doranda treasury while he was the chief minister of undivided Bihar.

Following his request, the jail superintendent and RIMS director were given orders to take the appropriate actions while keeping his health in mind.

The RJD leader is afflicted with a variety of diseases, including kidney issues.
