New Delhi, Feb 24:India expressed concern over the increasing tensions between Russia and Ukraine on Thursday, saying the situation is in danger of escalating into a serious crisis that could jeopardise the region’s peace and security.

TS Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, made the statement after Russia moved soldiers into Ukraine’s rebel areas of Donetsk and Luhansk. After the heads of these regions approached Russian President Vladimir Putin for assistance, Ukraine called an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

“The situation is in danger of spiralling into a major crisis. We express our deep concern over the developments, which if not handled carefully, may well undermine the peace and security of the region,” said Tirumurti, reiterating India’s call for immediate de-escalation of tensions.

“We call for immediate de-escalation and refraining from any further action that could contribute to a worsening of the situation. We call on all parties to exert greater efforts to bridge divergent interests,” he added.

Tirumurti stated the solution lies in sustained diplomatic conversation between the concerned parties, emphasising the importance of all sides exhibiting moderation in order to maintain peace and security.

He further stated that India is assisting in the return of all Indian nationals, including students, who are now staying in various parts of Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a special “military operation” to protect Donbas, the separatist-held region in eastern Ukraine, in a dramatic development.
