SUBHASH MISHRA

Dhanbad, March 1: Deafness complications have increased in children, especially between two to five years of age groups in the last two years owing to the Corona pandemic lockdown, pointed out a survey report of doctors at Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital, Dhanbad.

The survey team of the ENT department under Professor ( Dr) AK Thakur at SNMMCH, while revealing the research report, said that before the Corona pandemic, five to six patients on an average turned up in the OPD daily. But now, 20 to 25 people, most of them children, come with deafness.

“Lack of concentration, ignorance to follow commands, watching TV in loud volume and not hearing amidst noise are some of the signs of growing deafness complications in children,” said Dr AK Thakur.

According to Dr. Thakur, the cause for the rise in deafness difficulties among youngsters is that they were confined to their rooms during the Corona pandemic and spent most of their time on their phones and watching TV. Their interactions with classmates and idea exchanges were utterly disrupted.

“Early check-up of the complications, not leaving the child alone in the house and letting him play with other kids are some of the remedies to prevent deafness,” he said

Dr. D Chakravorty and Dr Ashutosh Kumar, two other members of the team, pointed out that not only children but even adults are being affected by hearing loss complications due to noise pollution.

Mega ENT camp on World Hearing Day

The ENT department of SNMMCH will organize a mega ENT camp on the occasion of World Hearing Day on March 3.

Besides Dhanbad, patients of Jamtara, Giridih and Bokaro districts are likely to be treated in the camp. Dr AK Thakur said that the camp would be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The motive of the camp is to check deafness, provide treatment and make people aware of hearing loss complications so that they do not suffer,” said the ENT head of the department.

Besides Dr Thakur, Dr D Chakravorty, Dr Ashutosh Kumar, Dr Dheeraj Kumar and Dr AK Chourasia will screen the patients and provide treatments to them.
