Moscow, March 4: The Russian parliament passed a law on Friday setting a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for circulating purposely ‘false’ material about the Russian military.
The measure, which was passed after a third reading, imposes prison sentences and fines for those who publish knowingly incorrect material about the military, with higher penalties imposed when the distribution is regarded to have major implications.
The bill was passed by Russian MPs, making the dissemination of “false” information and public calls for sanctions against Russia criminal offences.
“If the fakes lead to serious consequences then imprisonment of up to 15 years threatens,” the lower house of parliament said in a statement.
