New Delhi, Mar 5: In the wake of hardships of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) or the Indian MBBS students who returned back homw amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has allowed them to complete their internships in India.
According to the National Medical Commission (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate) Regulations, 2021, students pursuing medical studies abroad must complete two internships — one in the country where they received their MBBS and the other in India — in order to be registered to practise medicine in India.
NMC further added in the official circular that some FMG’s have been unable to complete their internships due to “compelling situations like COVID-19 and War, etc.”Taking this into consideration, FMG’s application to complete the remaining part of their internships in India is considered eligible. The same may be processed by the State Medical Councils provided that the candidates must have cleared FMGE before applying for completing of internship in India”.

For years, Indian students have been drawn to Ukraine’s state-run universities, which provide low-cost medical education. There are around 18,095 Indian students in Ukraine, according to the country’s ministry of education and science. Hundreds of students were doing their internship as part of their final year of study.
