New Delhi, Mar 24: The Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday that over 1.15 crore houses have been sanctioned for building across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U).
Hardeep Singh Puri, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, claimed that 94.79 lakh houses have been approved for building, with 56.20 lakh units already finished or given to beneficiaries.
“Based on the project proposals submitted by states and UTs (Union Territories), more than 115 lakh houses have been sanctioned across the country,” he said.
According to comprehensive project reports, states and UTs have been encouraged to speed the construction of sanctioned houses so that they are all completed within the allowed timetable.
According to him, state and local administrations are responsible for identifying and selecting beneficiaries under the PMAY-U.
The PMAY-U, according to the minister, tackles the need for affordable housing in urban areas in four ways: beneficiary-led individual house building or upgrading (BLC), affordable housing in partnership (AHP), credit-linked subsidy scheme (CLSS), and in-situ slum remediation (ISSR).
He said that states and UTs must develop project proposals based on their estimated demand for housing under the programme, phase them out based on their resources, and get them authorised by the state level sanctioning and monitoring committee (SLSMC).
States and UTs will submit the request to the ministry for approval of central assistance by the central sanctioning and monitoring committee (CSMC) after receiving clearance from SLSMCs.
Puri stated that project completion takes 12-18 months for the BLC vertical and 24-36 months for the AHP vertical of the system.
