Ranchi: BAU scientists develop four different varieties of high-yielding crops

Ranchi, March 25: The scientists of Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) have developed four varieties of crops out of the 16 released by the State Variety Release Committee of Jharkhand. The newly released varieties include 7 of rice, 2 of chillies and one each of tomato, litchi, bael, linseed, soybean, field pea and brinjal.

 

These high-yielding, early-maturing varieties are suitable for drought-prone, dryland ecology of Jharkhand and are resistant to major diseases and pests. The linseed variety Birsa Tisi-2 developed by BAU Chief Scientist Dr Sohan Ram has yield potential of 19.7 quintal per hectare, contains 36.75% oil, matures in 128-30 days showing 10.46% superiority over national check T-397.

 

BAU Director Research Dr A Wadood has informed that the release proposal was approved at a meeting with SVRC held at the Department of Agriculture under the chairmanship of Aboobacker Siddique P.

 

The soybean variety Birsa Soybean-4 developed by Dr. Nutan Verma of BAU has yield potential of 28 q/ha and matures in 110 days. Its yellow seed with brown hilum contains 40.30% protein and 17.55% oil. The field Pea Variety Birsa Matar-1, developed by Dr CS Mahto, is a dwarf type plant of medium maturity group having yield potential of 13-15 q/ha and matures in 112-116 days.

 

The high yielding  brinjal variety Birsa Chianki Baigan-3, developed by Dr Abdul Majid Ansari at Zonal Research Station, Chianki, Palamu, has yield potential of 350-400 q/ha and comes under medium maturity group.

 

Four varieties of rice namely CR Dhan-103, CR Dhan-107 (Unnat Vandna), CR DHan-415 and CR Dhan-804 have been developed by Dr NP Mandal, Principal Scientist of Central Rainfed Upland Rice Research Station, Hazaribagh.

 

Three high-yielding varieties of rice viz. Swarna Sukha Dhan, Swarna Purvi Dhan-1 and Swarna Purvi Dhan-2 having maturity period of 110-120 days were developed by Dr Santosh Kumar, Senior Scientist of ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region (RCER), Patna.

 

Two different varieties of chillies namely Swarna Arohi and Swarna Apurva were developed by Dr AK Singh, Head of Plandu, Ranchi based Farming System Research Centre for Hill and Plateau Region (FSRCHPR) of ICAR-RCER, have high yield potential of 20 tons per hectare and is suitable for round the year cultivation.

 

Bael variety Swarna Vasudha has been developed by Dr Bikas Das, Principal Scientist of FSRCHPR, Plandu, Ranchi and has a yield potential of 4,550 kg per plant having 1.2 to 1.8 per fruit weight. It has 82% pulp.
