Jamshedpur, April 5: Tata Steel would soon implement new norms for mobile phone use by workers within the plant premises in Jamshedpur. The move is aimed at reducing mishaps within the plant.
Tata Steel managing director cum CEO TV Narendran hinted at this whole addressing MD Online on Monday.
Sources in Tata Workers Union ( TWU ) said that while addressing MD Online Narendran said that new rules would be implemented with respect to the use of mobile phones by employees on duty.
According to union sources, the company MD said that the rules would earmark the areas where workers would be able to use their cellphones and where not.
“It is a welcome decision as the use of mobile phones often results in mishaps. At times it can result in a major mishap or a casualty. Therefore, the decision of the management regarding the framing of rules for use of mobile phones by workers is commendable, ” said a senior functionary of TWU.
Sources said inputs are being taken from various departments on the use of cellphone by workers.
Once the new rules are implemented restrictions would be imposed on workers for use of cellphones while at work.
An official said the new initiative is for the betterment of workers. “Often mobile phones distract the attention of workers causing harm to them. Mobile phones also result in work delay,” pointed out the official.
Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur works currently engage around 20,000 workers.
The steel major always emphasises on zero accidents. But, despite that mishaps continue to take place, sometimes resulting in casualties.
