West Bengal: Violence breaks out in Asansol amid bypoll election voting

Asansol, April 12: Bypolls for the Asansol Lok Sabha and Ballygunge Assembly constituencies is underway in West Bengal, setting up a furious political war on Tuesday. The polls opened at 7 a.m., with strong security in place.

BJP’s candidate Agnimitra Paul alleged that people from the Trinamool Congress hurled stones at her convoy, while the police took no action.

The elections are seen as a test for both the BJP and the TMC to see if they have been able to maintain or grow their support bases after the assembly elections. Retaining the Asansol seat would be a battle for the BJP, while the TMC will fight to keep its stronghold in the Ballygunge constituency.
