New Delhi, April 15: A right-wing fringe group put flags near the main gate of Jawaharlal Nehru University on Friday, days after a fight broke out between two student groups over meat served at a hostel on Ram Navami.

The Hindu Sena put up posters with the words ‘bhagwa (saffron) JNU’ on them. At least eight flags are visible on the concrete arc of the JNU Students’ Union, or JNUSU, gate in south Delhi, which has frequently seen fights between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s student wing ABVP and the Left-aligned JNU Students’ Union, or JNUSU.

The Delhi Police said that as soon as they became aware of the situation, they removed all of the posters. Meanwhile, Surjit Singh Yadav a Hindu Sena leader, claimed credit for the flags’ raising.

“Saffron is being insulted on JNU campus regularly. We want to warn those who are doing this. Mend your ways. We won’t tolerate this. We respect your ideology and every religion. But insult to saffron will not be tolerated and we might take stringent steps,” he said in a video statement.

Notably, on Ram Navami two groups of students clashed at apparently over the serving of meat at the hostel mess. According to the authorities, the violence resulted in the injuries of six students. However, the two sides claimed that over 60 students were injured on both sides.
