Notably, the Supreme Court on April 18 cancels bail granted to Ashish Mishra in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana had directed him to surrender within a week.

Ashish Mishra is the main suspect in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. October 3, violence occurred in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri, killing eight people, including four farmers. The incident occurred during a farmers’ demonstration before of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to Lakhimpur. A car driven by Ashish Mishra allegedly ploughed over the protesting farmers, killing four of them. Four more persons were killed in the ensuing fighting.

On February 10, the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench had granted him bail. Earlier, the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team probing the Lakhimpur Kheri case has presented its status report, recommending that the Uttar Pradesh government cancel the bail granted to primary suspect Ashish Mishra twice. The Uttar Pradesh administration was questioned by the Supreme Court on March 30 for not cancelling the bail of Ashish Mishra, the main offender in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, as recommended by the special investigation team.
