New Delhi, May 5: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MPs will contribute one month’s pay to the chief minister fund for Sri Lanka, the party declared on Thursday, in the midst of Sri Lanka’s economic crisis.

Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister Ali Sabry warned Parliament on Wednesday that the country’s usable foreign reserves had fallen to less than USD 50 million. After the main Opposition party filed no-confidence resolutions against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his government for mishandling the country’s greatest economic crisis, Parliament convened for a key session.

Under Article 42 of the Constitution, the major opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), handed forward two motions of no-confidence to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena against the SLPP coalition government and embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The President is responsible to Parliament for the exercise, performance, and discharge of his powers, according to Article 42. Before a motion can be placed on the order paper for debate, it must be given seven days’ notice. A date for a vote on the no-confidence motions has not yet been set.
