New Delhi, May 5: The Delhi High Court has been notified by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) that the authority’s core biometric information gathered under the Aadhaar Act will not be shared with anyone for any purpose.

UIDAI also stated that it does not collect biometric information using forensic-grade technology, stands, or procedures.

Core biometric information has been defined in Section 2(J) of the Aadhaar Act to mean fingerprint, iris scan, or any other biological property of an individual as may be specified by Regulations, according to UIDAI’s affidavit submitted in the Delhi High Court.

The UIDAI document was submitted in response to a court request in a 2018 robbery and murder case, in which the prosecution requested that biometric data acquired at the crime scene be compared with the Aadhaar database.

Even if the authority did collect biometric information, such as iris scans and fingerprints, based on technologies, standards, or procedures suitable for forensic purposes, UIDAI argued that using biometric data for random matching purposes may not be technologically feasible and thus outside the scope of the Act.
