Seoul, May 12: North Korea reported its first case of COVID-19 Omicron strain on Thursday and established a maximum emergency viral control system in the country, with leader Kim Jong Un vowing to destroy the virus.
Top authorities, including the country’s leader Kim Jong Un, conducted a crisis politburo meeting to assess the spread and stated they would adopt a maximum emergency virus control mechanism, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Pyongyang had been shut down for two days, according to NK News.
“Multiple sources have also heard reports of panic buying due to uncertainty of when the lockdown might end,” NK News reported, citing sources in Pyongyang.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, North Korea’s claim of being free of coronavirus has come to an end.
Kim promised to overcome the unexpected crisis in a conference held to review North Korea’s most vital emergency antiviral system, which had been firmly maintained for more than two years. He also ordered all officials to resist any and all attempts to halt the virus from spreading.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, the North Korean leader also ordered increased vigilance along the country’s borders on all fronts, in the air, and at sea to avoid a safety vacuum in the country’s national defence. Furthermore, North Korean authorities said that samples taken from fever sufferers were identical to the omicron. North Korea, on the other hand, stated that their goal was to manage and prevent the virus’s spread.
