New Delhi, May 15: Andrew Symonds,  former Australia all-rounder, died in a car accident at the age of 46 on the outskirts of Townsville on Sunday.

Symonds was a two-time World Cup winner and played 26 Tests, 198 One-Day Internationals, and 14 Twenty-20 Internationals for Australia.

“Australian cricket has lost another of its very best. Andrew was a generational talent who was instrumental in Australia’s success at World Cups and as part of Queensland’s rich cricket history. He was a cult figure to many who was treasured by his fans and friends”, Cricket Australia Chairperson Lachlan Henderson said.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed his death and expressed their condolences on Twitter.

Notably, in a match between Queensland and Tasmania in 1996, Andrew Symonds scored his first domestic century. This was his tenth game for Queensland. The match was contested at the Gabba cricket ground in Australia. Take a look. Symonds played in the IPL till 2011, appearing in 39 games and scoring 974 runs while taking 20 wickets. He last played for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, where he shared the field with India icons Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh.

Symonds is the third former cricketer from Australia to pass away this year. Rod Marsh’s death at the age of 74 and Shane Warne’s shocking death at the age of 52 had shocked the Australian cricket community in March.
