Dhanbad, May 17: The oldest jewellery shop was completely gutted in fire at Govindpur main market, on the side of NH-2, under Govindpur police station on Monday late night. Ornaments worth several lakh rupees were damaged in the incident.

The officer-in-charge of Govindpur police station Umesh Prasad Singh told media persons that prima facie, a short circuit looks like the reason for the fire.

The shop reportedly caught fire at around 2 am. When the sheet of flame began billowing out, other shop owners noticed it and informed the owner.

Shop owner Sumit Burman said that he was informed about the fire in the shop at around 3 am. The fire brigade was also pressed into service soon and it took almost one hour to douse it but till then, everything was gutted.

“Damage in the fire is being assessed but ornaments worth lakhs are estimated to have been lost as the shop is completely burnt,” said Burman.

Sumit Kumar Burman ruled out any sabotage conspiracy and said that short circuit looks like the reason for the fire but a police investigation would reveal the real fact.

The shop, Cholabal Sonar Jeweller’s is said to be the oldest jewellery shop in Govindpur. It was set up over 70 years ago when Dhanbad was a part of the Manbhum district and Govindpur Sub Division. “I belong to the third generation of the family who operates the shop,” said Burman.
