Ranchi, May 18: The pet lovers from Ranchi have not taken the Ranchi Municipal Corporation’s (RMC) registration of dogs seriously as only 120 pet dogs out of approximately 10,000 have been registered in the year 2021-22.

HOPE and Animal Trust, an NGO that has been given a tender by RMC to conduct the registration of pet dogs in the city, informed lagatar24.com about the reasons for getting the dogs registered.

Praveen Ohal, CEO of HOPE and Animal Trust, said that the fund generated through the registration is used in providing vaccination and other medical services to the stray dogs in the city.

“People are not concerned for the stray dogs that are dying on the roads. We only charge Rs. 100 for registration and that fund is used to take care of the stray dogs. The other benefit of registration is that we provide free vaccination to the registered dog. It normally cost Rs. 300-500 for one dose of rabies shot,” he said.

He added that people should get their dogs registered as it will help in maintaining proper data by the RMC.

However, Animal Welfare Trust, another NGO, has explained that the Animal Welfare Board of India is the one that should give the right to RMC to conduct the registration of dogs.

“RMC is conducting the registration but is it providing any benefits? Dogs in the streets are still dying and no one is taking care of them. The registration fee is Rs 100 but are they providing any facilities for the registered dogs? These are probably why people don’t want their dogs to get registered,” the official from the trust explained.

The fine for not registering a dog under RMC is Rs. 50.
