Lucknow, May 20: Azam Khan, senior Samajwadi Party leader, was released from the Sitapur district jail in Uttar Pradesh on Friday morning, a day after the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in a cheating case involving Rampur’s Kotwali police station.

Azam Khan was imprisoned for more than two years in connection with a number of offences, including land grabbing.

He was granted bail in 88 of 89 instances, and the Supreme Court’s decision to grant temporary relief opened the door for his release.

According to the news agency PTI, the release order was obtained around 11 p.m. on Thursday, and the SP leader was released at 8 a.m. on Friday after following all formalities.

Khan was greeted by his sons Abdullah Azam Khan and Adeeb Azam Khan, as well as Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party (Lohiya) leader Shivpal Singh Yadav and a big crowd of supporters, following his release.

“The Supreme Court gave justice,” said Abdullah Azam Khan ahead of his father’s release from Sitapur district jail.

Notably, on Thursday a bench led by Justice L Nageswara Rao granted Khan interim bail in the alleged cheating case, stating that the facts in the case warranted the use of the Constitution’s exceptional power under Article 142.
