Ranchi, May 25: The by-election of the Mandar assembly seat will be held on June 23.
The Election Commission of India issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday.
According to the press release of the ECI, the gazette notification will be published on May 30 whereas candidates can file their nomination papers by June 6. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on the next day whereas candidates can withdraw their nomination by June 9. The result will be declared on June 26.
The by-polling was necessitated after the conviction of the sitting MLA of Mandar Bandhu Tirkey.
On March 26, the court of Special Judicial Commissioner and CBI Prabhat Kumar Sharma awarded him three years of rigorous imprisonment. The court found him guilty under various sections of IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
According to the law, if a public representative is convicted with a minimum of two years of imprisonment, he or she shall lose membership. Bandhu Tirkey will be disqualified from contesting the election. The law says that such conviction shall continue to be disqualified for a further period of six years since his release. The case RC 5 (A)/ 2010 was lodged against him by the CBI for possessing disproportionate assets worth Rs 6.28 Lakh.
