New Delhi, May 31: The Supreme Court directed the Bombay high court on Tuesday to consider hearing former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh’s bail petition in a money laundering case as soon as possible.

The senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) politician, who is currently detained, told the Supreme Court that his bail application had not been heard in the high court since March 25. The former minister was ordered by the Supreme Court to file an application in high court for an early hearing of his pending plea.

Deshmukh was brought to the KEM Hospital’s ICU last week after complaining of elevated blood pressure and chest pain.

Notably in November 2021, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) detained the 72-year-old former minister in connection with an alleged extortion and money laundering case worth Rs 100 crore. Deshmukh and others were charged by the ED after the Central Bureau of Investigation launched a corruption investigation against him (CBI).

After former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh accused him of corruption, the NCP leader resigned as home minister. He was arrested by the CBI in a case a few days later.

In a 201-page report delivered to chief minister Uddhav Thackeray last month, the Justice KU Chandiwal Commission constituted to investigate Singh’s allegations against Deshmukh granted him a clean chit and branded the Indian Police Services (IPS) officer’s assertions untrue.
