NEW DELHI: National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Thursday urged the Central government to launch a detailed investigation into bribery allegations against Gautam Adani, following charges filed by US prosecutors. Meanwhile, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi escalated his criticism, demanding Adani’s arrest and alleging deep ties between the Adani Group and the ruling BJP.
Farooq Abdullah Calls for Thorough Investigation
Speaking to reporters, Abdullah emphasized the need for a credible inquiry. “A Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has been demanded. The Centre must take this seriously and investigate thoroughly. Adani has faced similar accusations earlier,” he stated.
Rahul Gandhi Demands Arrest
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi sharpened his attack, calling for Gautam Adani’s immediate arrest and investigation. Gandhi alleged violations of both American and Indian laws, accusing the businessman of corrupt practices linked to BJP funding.
“Begin the investigation with Adani. Arrest him, interrogate him, and uncover everyone involved. In the end, the Prime Minister’s name will emerge because BJP’s funding is linked to Adani. The country is in Adani’s grip,” Gandhi claimed.
Adani Group Denies Allegations
The Adani Group dismissed the allegations as baseless, citing the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
“The charges in the indictment are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty,” the group stated, referencing the US Department of Justice. It also announced the deferral of its subsidiaries’ proposed US dollar bond offerings in light of the developments.
US Legal Proceedings
The allegations involve a bribery scheme tied to solar energy contracts. A five-count indictment was unsealed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, naming Gautam Adani and other Indian executives.
