Jamshedpur, Sept 2: Over 1,500 advocates of the Jamshedpur Bar Association on Saturday observed a day-long strike to protest assault on a clerk on the civil court premises in Bhuiyandih under Sitaramdera thana area on Friday evening.

The attack was made by a litigant on the clerk of the additional district judge-I at 6 pm, during a time when there was no police security around.

Though the attacker was apprehended and later handed over to the Sitaramdera police, the advocates’ fraternity took strong exception to the incident because a similar attack may take place on them also.

Moreover, the attack on the clerk made the advocates security concerned because the court premises is provided with police security cover upto 5 pm only whereas the court premises remains bustling with advocates and judicial subordinate staff till late evening.

While observing the strike, the Jamshedpur Bar Association’s ad hoc committee handed over a memorandum to the district judge urging him to increase the court security and to extend the police security till 8 pm.

Ad hoc committee member advocate Tapash Mitra said the extension of security cover in the court premises till 8 pm is necessary and expressed his hope that the district judge will definitely consider the demand.

It may be mentioned here that the police security was extraordinarily brought in at the Jamshedpur civil court premises since 2016 when transporter Upendra Singh was gunned down at the Bar Association building.

Since the transporter’s murder a large number of police men are posted on the court premises. The police men who remain posted there from 10 am till 5 pm only not only do frisk each and every visitor but also remain vigilant throughout this period.
