New Delhi, March 21: The Supreme Court dismissed two suits on Monday after the Centre announced that it has finished the mammoth task of removing 22,500 trapped Indian students from Ukraine’s war zone.
Attorney General K K Venugopal’s representations that the Centre, in addition to bringing back stranded students, is also looking into representation on their studies being harmed by the ongoing war were noted by a bench consisting of Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justice Krishna Murari.
A mammoth job has been done by the government and 22,500 students have been brought back. The government is looking into the representation (of students) and the government will look into it,” Venugopal said.
The bench took the Attorney General’s submissions into consideration and decided to dismiss the cases.
The Supreme Court heard arguments on March 4 that the government had already evacuated 17,000 trapped Indian students from Ukraine. It was hearing two appeals, one from Tiwari and the other from Fathima Ahana, a Bengaluru resident.
Ahana requested that the Ministry of External Affairs issue a directive to the Ministry of External Affairs to obtain permission for her and other trapped students to cross the Moldovan checkpoint from Ukraine en route to Romania to board an Air India evacuation flight.
The petition further asked the MEA to take immediate and effective diplomatic efforts and measures to evacuate the petitioner and others from Ukraine to India.
