New Delhi, Feb 4: AIMIM chairman and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi was given Z category security cover by the government a day after his convoy was allegedly fired upon, according to reports.
The ‘Z category’ is a 22-person security detail that includes four to six NSG commandos and police officers. The Delhi Police, the ITBP, or the CRPF furnish it, along with one escort car.
On Friday, Owaisi stated that he has never requested security cover and will never do so because the government is responsible for his safety.
Unknown gunmen are said to have opened fire on Owaisi’s car in Hapur as he was returning to Delhi from election-related events in western Uttar Pradesh.
When the incident occurred at around 6 p.m., the AIMIM chief’s vehicle was near the Chhijarsi toll plaza on the Hapur-Ghaziabad stretch of National Highway 24, he claimed.
No one was hurt in the incident, according to Owaisi, who also urged the Election Commission (EC) to conduct an impartial investigation. He claimed there was a ‘mastermind’ behind the attack.
“I want to tell the EC that there is definitely some mastermind behind this attack. A few days ago, at a Dharam Sansad in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, there was talk of taking my life. This is on record, it should be seen,” he said.
