New Delhi, April 9: A number of prominent Akali Dal leaders from Punjab, including Sardar Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal and Sardar Jasjeet Singh Atwal, joined the Bharatiya Janta party (BJP) on Sunday.
At the BJP’s national headquarters in the Capital on Sunday, they were formally welcomed into the saffron fold in front of senior BJP leaders. Dr. Maitreyan, a leader of the AIADMK and a former Rajya Sabha member, would also join the saffron party on Sunday, according to sources in the BJP.
The great-grandson of India’s first Indian governor-general, C Rajagopalachari, joined the BJP earlier on Saturday. Anil Antony, the son of AK Antony, a union minister, left the party after publicly endorsing Narendra Modi in response to the contentious BBC documentary series.
On April 6, in the presence of Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and V Muraleedharan, Anil Antony formally joined the BJP. Senior party figures Tarun Chugh and Anil Baluni were also present, along with Kerala BJP chairman K Surendran.
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy also joined the BJP in the nation’s capital earlier on Friday. At an event held at the party headquarters, Reddy, who served as the final chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, joined the BJP in the presence of Union minister Prahlad Joshi, general secretary Arun Singh, and MP K Laxman.
