Amethi: In a tragic turn of events, the brutal murder of a school teacher and his family in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, was the result of an extramarital affair between the accused and the victim’s wife, police confirmed on Saturday. Chandan Verma, the prime accused, confessed to killing Sunil, the teacher, along with his wife Poonam and their two minor daughters, following a fallout in his illicit relationship with Poonam.
Confession and Motive
Amethi Superintendent of Police Anoop Singh disclosed that Verma admitted to the crime during interrogation, revealing that his relationship with Poonam, which had lasted for about 1.5 years, had recently deteriorated. “The accused was under stress due to the souring of the relationship. This stress seems to have driven him to commit the murders,” Singh stated.
The Crime and Its Aftermath
On Thursday, Verma allegedly entered Sunil’s home with several armed accomplices and opened fire, killing the entire family, including their 6-year-old daughter Drishti and 1-year-old daughter. Police reports indicate that Verma fired 10 rounds before attempting to take his own life, a plan that failed. All four victims were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Manhunt and Arrest
The following day, police apprehended Verma at a toll plaza in Noida while he was attempting to flee towards Delhi. During the arrest, Verma sustained injuries after grabbing an officer’s weapon and trying to escape. The police traced him based on a WhatsApp message he had posted, which ominously read, “Five people will die, I will show you soon,” indicating his intent before the murders.
Previous Complaint and Investigation
Just before the murders, Poonam had filed a complaint against Verma under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, making him the prime suspect in the case. Police are now focusing on recovering the pistol used in the crime and the Bullet motorbike Verma rode while fleeing the scene.
The investigation continues as the authorities work to uncover more details and bring closure to the case.
