Amit Shah praises wrestler Antim Panghal on winning historic gold

New Delhi, Aug 20:  Following victory in the women’s 53 Kg weight division in Sofia, Bulgaria, India’s Under-20 World Wrestling champion Antim Panghal received congratulations and high acclaim from India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah.

At the Junior World Wrestling Championship, Antim Panghal made history by becoming the first female wrestler to take home a gold medal.

“Proud moment. Congratulations to Antim Panghal for creating history and becoming the first Indian girl to win a Gold medal at the U-20 World Championships. India salutes your hard work and commitment. Best wishes for your bright future, keep shining, ” tweeted Home Minister Amit Shah.

German Wrestler was defeated by Antim in the qualification round 11-0. The Japanese were taken aback when Antim defeated the Japanese grappler by fall in the quarterfinal. She comfortably overcame a wrestler from Ukraine in the semifinals, then she defeated the Kazakh wrestler in the championship match.

The other two wrestlers won bronze medal matches while the other two wrestlers lost in the championship match and earned silver medals. With 160 points, the Indian Junior Women’s Wrestling Team secured the second place trophy. Japan held the top spot with 230 points, and the USA placed third with 124 points.

For India, Antim won gold in the 53 kg weight class, Sonam and Priyanka won silver in the 62 kg and 65 kg weight classes, and Sito and Reetika took home bronze in the 57 kg and 72 kg weight classes, respectively.

All five wrestlers in Greco-Roman style were defeated in their opening match. On Saturday, matches in the final five weight divisions will take place.

Indian grapplers have recently been in incredible form, capturing 12 medals at the Commonwealth Games, including six gold medals, bringing their total for the quadrennial competition to 61 medals.
