Amritsar, Nov 5: An Amritsar court on Saturday ordered that the primary suspect in the murder of Shiv Sena (Taksali) leader Sudhir Suri be held in police custody for seven days. Sandeep Singh, the accused, who is 31 years old, was introduced to the court under heavy security.
Suri was killed by gunfire while participating in a rally on Friday in broad daylight. He was protesting the administration of the Gopal Mandir on Majitha Road, one of the busiest streets in the city, after what he called an act of sacrilege—the purported discovery of some shattered idols of Hindu deities by the wayside.
The 0.32 bore legal weapon used in the incident was seized after Singh was taken into custody. Police said that he is the owner of a clothing store close to the protest scene.
