Vijayawada, Dec 22: Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday confirmed the second case of the Omicron variant in the state. A 39-year-old woman who came from Kenya to Chennai & then travelled to Tirupati, had tested positive for Covid-19 on December 12. Her Omicron positive sample was sent for genomic sequencing today. According to the state government, her family members have tested negative.
“ A 39 years old foreign traveler came from Kenya to Chennai airport on December 10. She tested positive on December 22. She is healthy and in institutional quarantine under the close observation of the health department. Six of the woman’s family members were tested and were found COVID negative,” said Dr Hymavati, the Director of Andhra Pradesh’s Public Health Department.
With this, the total number of Omicron cases in India is now 214, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Delhi and Maharashtra have recorded 57 and 54 Omicron cases, respectively, out of a total of 214 cases. The new variety is at least three times more transmissible than delta, according to the Center.
