New Delhi, Aug 24: Anubrata Mondal, the leader of the Trinamool party who was arrested, will continue to be detained after a CBI judge refused his request for release and placed him in judicial custody for a period of 14 days.
On August 11, Mondal, a district president for the Trinamool Congress, was detained in connection with the investigation into cattle smuggling in West Bengal. The CBI released him today.
Anubrata Mondal had promised the court that if it decided to grant him bail, he would rent a home close to the CBI headquarters in Kolkata, reside there, and refrain from travelling to Birbhum.
He had requested release due to health reasons, and his attorney said the charges against him were unsupported by any proof. He was a powerful individual, according to the CBI, and his release on bail would surely result in the compromise of evidence. He reported having breathing issues, therefore an oxygen cylinder was kept available throughout the hearing.
The special CBI judge who was hearing the case complained the day before the hearing that he had received a threat. Mondal has asked the CBI to look into the matter.
The Trinamool leader responded that the CBI should look into the threat because the individual under whose name it was issued has denied issuing it and claimed the signature is forged when questioned about it.
