Islamabad, Aug 22: Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, applied for anticipatory bail at the Islamabad High Court on Monday in order to avoid being arrested after being charged with offences under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The pre-arrest bail application was submitted on behalf of the ousted PM by the legal team of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party, of which Khan is the chairman. Khan said in the plea that he is prepared to appear before the court whenever called, according to reports in Pakistani media.
The plea also said that Imran Khan has no prior convictions and no criminal history, according to The Nation.
Pakistan’s political unrest meanwhile worsened when news broke on Sunday that Imran Khan would be detained on terrorism-related charges by the Shehbaz Sharif-led administration.
The terrorism accusations stem from a speech Khan gave on Saturday in Islamabad, where he threatened to sue judges and police personnel and claimed that one of his close advisers had been tortured after his incarceration.
Imran Khan was charged with violating Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, (punishment for acts of terrorism) over comments he made at a rally in Islamabad last Saturday (August 20).
“He had terrorised and threatened top police officials and a respected female additional sessions judge” with the aim to stop them from performing their functions and abstain from pursuing any action against any individual related to his PTI party,” The FIR against him reads that in his speech.
