Guwahati, July 10: During a street drama in which he is disguised as Lord Shiva, a man was detained in Assam today on suspicion of offending religious sensitivities.
Yesterday, Birinchi Bora dressed as Lord Shiva to protest the Narendra Modi government’s price increases while acting in a skit with a female co-actor who was costumed as Parvati. Videos of their performance went viral on social media.
However, Hindu organisations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal criticised their performance, protesting it and later filing a complaint against the actor for allegedly hurting religious sensibilities and exploiting religion for political benefit.
Birinchi Bora was apprehended and taken to the Nagaon Sadar Police Station as a result of the complaint.
In the street play, Birinchi Bora and his co-actor Parishimita were seen riding a two-wheeler on a road while they were dressed as Shiva and Parvati. The car stops at the appointed location for the street play, ostensibly because it ran out of fuel. Shiva and Parvati then argue about the matter, during which “Shiva” criticises the Modi administration for concerns like rising fuel prices.
He urged people to resist the Narendra Modi administration in order to stop the price hikes. Nagaon police have not yet made any remarks regarding Bora’s detention.
