Dhanbad, Nov 25: Interns and junior doctors of Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad boycotted emergency service on Wednesday evening after a mob of attendants abused and assaulted a female medico following the death of a shootout incident victim.

The unruly attendants created mayhem for hours at the emergency department. When police did not act, the agitating interns and junior doctors reached the Bekarbandh based residence of the deputy commissioner (DC) demanding safety and action on the people who assaulted them in the emergency restroom.

After one hour of waiting, DC Sandip Singh came out to meet the agitating doctors and assured to tighten the security at the medical college hospital so that such types of incidents don’t occur in future again. The DC also took stock of security at emergency from the medical college superintendent Dr AK Barnbal and talked to the principal secretary health.

“Mob of attendants entered the emergency and assaulted us for the death of a patient. So, we asked the DC to set up a police picket on the campus and order to allow only one attendant with a patient. We also want the arrest of the people who assaulted the doctors including female medicos,” said a junior doctor after meeting the DC.

Over hundreds of Wasseypur residents became berserk and stormed in the emergency after the death of Naya Bazaar’s property dealer Mahtab Alam alias Nanhey, who was shot at in Wasseypur in the afternoon.

Junior doctors informed that the mob created mayhem for the first time when the patient was declared dead and second time at post-mortem.

On receiving the information about the turmoil, the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sanjiv Kumar along with officers in-charge of Saraidhela and Bank More police stations, Kishore Tirkey and Randhir Kumar, reached the medical college.

“Assaulters were not only abusing the doctors but were also threatening to turn the hospital into a graveyard. The police on duty had become mute spectators. So, for our safety we went to the DC residence,” said a junior doctor.

Sources said that the property dealer succumbed to bullet injury during treatment but apprehending turmoil from attendants, doctors of emergency held up the death declaration.

Due to this assault on doctors, the emergency services in the hospital remained affected for more than five hours in the evening.
