Lucknow, Oct 27: Azam Khan, leader of the Samajwadi Party and a legislator in Uttar Pradesh (UP), was found guilty and given a three-year prison sentence on Thursday by a special MP/MLA court in Rampur after he made remarks about UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in 2019.
On April 9, 2019, a case was filed against Khan in Rampur for allegedly making provocative comments about then-District Magistrate IAS Aunjaneya Kumar Singh and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The charges were filed under sections 153a and 505-1 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 125 of the Representation of the People Act.
Khan is no longer qualified to serve in the state legislature or as a member of Parliament as a result of the sentence.
Khan was granted interim relief by the Supreme Court in a case involving alleged cheating, and he was subsequently freed from the Sitapur jail earlier this year. Over 90 allegations, including theft and corruption, are brought against the SP head.
