Patna: Just a day before the first phase of Bihar Assembly elections, Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party suffered a major setback after its Munger candidate Sanjay Singh resigned from both the party and his candidature, announcing his support for the BJP.
Candidate Switches Sides Before Polls
Sanjay Singh, who belongs to the Extremely Backward Class (Dhanuk community) and was one of Jan Suraaj’s prominent local leaders, joined hands with the BJP and extended full support to the saffron party’s candidate Kumar Pranay from Munger. His decision, coming just 24 hours before polling, has raised serious questions about Prashant Kishor’s election strategy and party cohesion.
BJP Strengthens Position in Munger
Welcoming Singh’s support, BJP leader Raju Jha said, “We were already in a strong position in Munger, and his joining will further strengthen our lead. The people trust the double-engine government of the BJP.” Political observers believe this move could consolidate BJP’s vote share among the OBC sections in the region.
Growing Troubles for Jan Suraaj
This is not the first defection to hit Prashant Kishor’s fledgling party. Earlier, the Jan Suraaj candidate from Brahampurhad also resigned. Despite fielding candidates on all 243 Assembly seats, the party continues to struggle with internal dissent and credibility issues ahead of its first major electoral test in Bihar.
