Bihar, Feb 17: At least five people were killed and 18 others were injured after a pickup van carrying devotees fell into a water-filled ditch near Gai Ghat in the Chenari police station area on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Matra Devi, Kanti Devi and the pickup van driver Mithu Kumar and two remain unidentified.
Police said, “The pickup van carrying 23 devotees from Gera-Chandi village of Gorari police station area of Karakat was going for Jalabhishek for Gupta Dham Shivratri of Chenari police station area.”
According to one of the devotees, “The accident occurred when they were going to Jalabhishek for Gupta Dham Shivratri and suddenly the pickup van fell into the ditch on a mountain road. They were going to Guptadham to offer prayers on Mahashivratri. Meanwhile, they have become victims of the accident.”
After receiving the information, police reached the spot and took the injured to PHP in Chenari for treatment, where eight people were referred to Sadar Hospital in Sasaram as they were seriously injured.
Moreover, the dead bodies were also taken to Sadar Hospital in Sasaram for an autopsy. Rescue and search operations are underway.
